This qualification offers two tailored pathways based on your interests and goals. Through our partnership with the local council, you will gain hands-on experience maintaining green spaces while developing the knowledge and skills needed to achieve recognised qualifications that support your future career.

Alternatively, our partnership with a local farm provides the opportunity to learn about holistic animal care and farming practices. If you are interested in working with animals or exploring the farming industry, this pathway will help you build valuable skills and understanding.

By the end of the course, you will have developed a range of transferable skills to support progression into further education, employment, or greater independence in everyday life.

Course details

At Nacro Education Middlesbrough, this course is designed to develop both practical and personal skills through real workplace experiences. You will take part in landscape maintenance tasks within the community or gain experience working on a farm, depending on your chosen pathway.

You will also learn how to safely maintain and use two-stroke petrol machinery commonly used in plant control.

Our approach focuses on building confidence, motivation, and aspiration. Lessons are delivered in a supportive environment that encourages discussion, understanding, and hands-on learning. We recognise that everyone learns differently, so sessions are paced to allow time for reflection and full engagement.

This course is ideal if you:

  • Have an interest in working with animals or contributing to the local community
  • Want to develop practical and personal skills as a pathway into education or employment
  • Have an EHCP and would benefit from additional support
  • Are looking to combine vocational learning with personal and social development

You will also gain valuable work experience to help build independence and confidence.

Our course allows you to combine your learning with work experience to develop your independence and confidence.

Option 1: Environmental & Landscape Maintenance

  • Safe and effective working practices in the land-based industries.
  • Assist with establishment and maintenance of plants and sites in the countryside
  • Assist with the maintenance of structures and surfaces in the countryside

Option 2: Introduction to Animal & Farm Maintenance

  • Safe and effective working practices in the land-based Industries.
  • Assist with the care of animals
  • Assist with the preparation and maintenance of animal accommodation

Assessment is carried out through a combination of written assignments, portfolio building, and practical observations. You will be fully supported throughout the course, and expectations will be clearly explained during enrolment.

Option 1: Environmental & Landscape Maintenance: You will do practical work experience every week in the community by completing tasks as part of our countryside renovations for the local council. This includes tree surgery, hedge trimming, fence and bridge building, maintaining bridleways and stiles.

Option 2: Intro to Animal & Farm Maintenance: You will carry out practical work experience within a farming environment. This farm cares for chickens, sheep and horses. You will have the opportunity to learn about the different growing processes of veg and plants and be there throughout the seasons to see how they develop.

On successful completion, you will achieve a Level 1 Award in Land-based Studies, with units tailored to your chosen pathway.

This course can support progression to:

  • Voluntary or paid work placements
  • Further education, such as Level 1 Construction
  • Level 2 Animal Care with another provider

You will also have access to ongoing careers advice and guidance to help you plan your next steps.
