Nacro’s response to short prison sentences

Published:

In response to the news that ministers are considering banning short prison sentences in England and Wales:

“We welcome the news that The Ministry of Justice is considering banning prison sentences of less than six months in England and Wales. Short sentences are proven to be less effective at reducing re-offending than community sentences. We see first-hand that they are often too short to for any rehabilitative interventions to be effective yet can lead to someone losing their job, home and family ties – leaving a real risk of re-offending on release.

If we are serious about reducing re-offending this is exactly the kind of step we must take.”
