Nacro response to Autumn Budget 2017 announcement

Nacro Chief Executive, Jacob Tas, said:
“It is welcome to see the Chancellor’s focus on the importance of housing in today’s Budget. We know through our work with some of the most disadvantaged people across the country that having a safe and secure home is absolutely central to someone’s chances and opportunities in life. But too often high rents, insecure tenancies or a lack of deposit mean this is simply out of reach.

“We are therefore pleased to see the government’s commitment to taking action to eliminate rough sleeping and establish a homelessness taskforce as well as consulting on the barriers to longer tenancies and giving funding to support rents for people at risk of homelessness. We must now put in place a comprehensive housing strategy for vulnerable people building on today’s announcements.

“Today’s announcement on reducing the initial waiting period for Universal Credit is also a welcome step forward. To make Universal Credit truly deliver, the Government should further look at the implications for vulnerable people who need support to help them get back on their feet.”
