Today, MoJ have released new data on the justice system. Nacro comments on the data about recall to prison.
- Data reveals 13,193 people were recalled to prison in the last quarter, a 31% increase on the same period last year.
- Nacro’s analysis finds for every one person released from custody, another person is recalled.Â

“The continued rise in the number of people recalled to prison shows a system that simply isn’t working. More people were recalled to custody than were released, piling further pressure on an already overcrowded prison estate.
“Thousands of people are being sent back to custody each year for licence breaches rather than new crimes with there being nearly ten thousand people in the last quarter alone. We know from our work with people in criminal justice system that many of these recalls are linked to homelessness after leaving prison, addiction to drugs and alcohol and mental health issues.
“Too many recalls happen because people aren’t supported to rebuild their lives. Stable housing, healthcare, and employment support are essential if we want to break this cycle, reduce unnecessary returns to prison and keep the public safe.”
