Nacro response to Ministry of Justice plans to reduce reoffending

In response to Ministry of Justice plans to “reduce reoffending”, Nacro Chief Executive Campbell Robb said:

“It is welcome news that the government intends to focus on rehabilitation and to set ambitious targets to monitor that for people leaving prison, the key elements are in place to reduce reoffending – a home, a job and support. We know these are crucial to giving people the best chance at a second chance.

“However, we must see these ambitions backed up with the resources needed for the task ahead. Current prison targets on employment and housing after release are not being met and around 1,000 people are released from prison homeless every month. If we really want to turn the tide of reoffending and create safer communities for all of us, we have to make sure that targets are backed up with investment and a detailed plan. With the yearly cost of reoffending at £18 billion we simply can’t afford to keep getting this wrong.”
