Amber Rudd review | Nacro responds

Nacro responds to announcement that Amber Rudd will lead a major review into the safety and security of prisons

Published:

Responding to the government’s announcement that Amber Rudd will lead a major review into the safety and security of prisons, Enver Solomon, Chief Executive of Nacro, said:

“Prisons aren’t doing a good enough job of rehabilitating people so they can move away from crime, stop revolving in and out of custody, and help make communities safer.”

“To achieve that, there needs to be much more purposeful activity in prisons and a step change in through-the-gate support into treatment, housing, and work. The people we work with tell us that long days locked in their cells with nothing to do often pushes them towards drugs and violent behaviour.”
“It’s important that the review focuses on rehabilitation and resettlement back into the community, rather than treating this as disconnected from safety and security.”
