Nacro is formed from the National Association of Discharged Prisoners’ Aid Societies.

Nacro starts providing housing support for people who have been in the criminal justice system.

1983

Nacro undertakes a wide range of crime prevention projects on housing estates.

1991

Nacro’s Mental Health Unit is launched to improve responses to people with mental health challenges.

1992

Nacro’s 42 new careers training centres support 4,940 unemployed adults and 1,180 disadvantaged young adults.

2001

Nacro runs 25 community-based programmes for young people, with the support of 490 volunteers.

2008

Nacro arranges the first ever national directory of Liaison and Diversion (L&D) schemes for the Home Office and the Department of Health.

2010

Nacro’s Change the Record Campaign launches to call on the government to reform the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and Criminal Records Bureau checks.

The Beyond Youth Custody (BYC) programme starts to challenge, advance and promote better thinking in policy and practice for the effective resettlement of young people.

Nacro, in partnership with Aquarius and Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health Foundation Trust, launch Recovery Near You, a support service for those concerned about drinking or drug use.

Nacro provides offender management services in 26 prisons including Young Offender Institutions and in the community.

Nacro Community Voice Council is launched to ensure the people using Nacro services are directly impacting policy, campaigning, and service delivery.

Nacro’s Employer Advice Service starts delivering training to employers about employing people with criminal records.

Nacro education centres are rated "Good" by Ofsted, in recognition of the support and care that students receive at Nacro.

Totton College, a further education college in Hampshire, joins Nacro’s education services.

Nacro opens a new service for veterans in Greater Manchester and expands support for people with substance misuse challenges.

2018

Nacro starts delivery on the Bail Accommodation and Support Service (BASS) contract to provide housing for people who do not have a suitable address for the term of their licence or Bail Order.

Nacro starts running CONNECT Manchester, a partnership with Riverside, The Salvation Army and Sanctuary Supported Living.

Nacro is awarded and starts to deliver the new CAS-2 contract. Our Community Accommodation Service (CAS-2) provides housing for people who do not have a suitable address for the term of their licence or Bail Order. Nacro delivers CAS-2 on behalf of the Ministry of Justice across England and Wales.

Following Nacro’s Friday releases campaign, the Government confirms that Friday releases from prison will end in the majority of cases from December 2023.
