Nacro in Action

Brixton Prison Resettlement Information and Advice Service

Nacro's resettlement advice service in Brixton prison offers help and support to serving prisoners. Support can range from helping with housing and claiming benefits to sorting out training and employment opportunities.

The service also arranges a series of seminars and open days inviting employers and other organisations that help ex-offenders into the prison.

Resettling ex-offenders and prisoners to reduce the risk of their re-offending is at the heart of Nacro’s work to change lives and reduce crime.

Our dedicated Resettlement Plus Helpline offers information and advice to ex-offenders, serving prisoners, their families and friends and to organisations working with them. Each year, the helpline deals with over 30,000 enquiries. The most common enquiries are about dealing with a criminal record, and how to find work and somewhere to live.

The helpline is on 0800 0181 259 (freephone) or 020 7840 6464.

The helpline uses Nacro’s Resettlement Service Finder database to find services in the community from over 16,000 records of projects providing a wide range of services to ex-offenders: from help with drug problems to housing and employment services. The database is available to prisons and probation services on disk and will soon be available online.

Nacro’s disclosure service can run Criminal Record Bureau disclosure checks for employers. We can also advise employers about setting up straightforward and fair disclosure systems for themselves and about how to deal with existing or potential employees who have disclosed a criminal conviction.

Nacro trains prison officers to give housing and employment advice to prisoners and runs resettlement advice services in many prisons – including some where we’ve trained prisoners to give housing advice. Nacro's Prison and Resettlement Services team works with prison governors and other prison staff to enhance prison regimes in the areas of resettlement, race relations and the needs of women prisoners.

We have regular contact with nearly all prisons in England and Wales, including distributing thousands of copies of our resettlement advice leaflets.
