Nacro Reacts to MoJ’s Announcement on Expanding Electronic Tagging in England and Wales

Published:

Nacro responds to the Ministry of Justice’s announcement on expanding electronic tagging in England and Wales, as tens of thousands of people will be released From prison wearing real-time tracking tags in the largest expansion of electronic tagging in British history.

Enver Solomon, Chief Executive of Nacro said:

“We know from our work with many people leaving prison that tagging can play an important role keeping communities safe. But it only helps reduce reoffending if it supports people to rebuild their lives by finding stable housing, getting into work and reconnecting with family. Prioritising probation supervision for those assessed as high risk is understandable, but to reduce reoffending and prevent future victims, it is critical that those judged as low risk who also have multiple needs get the support they need. Many are stuck in a cycle of crime driven by homelessness, poor mental health or drug addiction. Without the right support, they are far more likely to end up back in the criminal justice system instead of turning their lives around.”
