Nacro response to HMI Prisons and Probation report on how children leaving custody are being “set up to fail”

In response to HMI Prisons and Probation report on youth resettlement, stating that children leaving custody are being “set up to fail” through lack of support, Nacro Chief Executive, Campbell Robb, said, “It is simply unacceptable that little has changed since the last HMI Prisons and Probation report on youth resettlement published in 2015, which showed poor outcomes for children who had been released from custody. We know that having somewhere safe to live and access to health services, as well as education and training opportunities, are the basic foundations to support children to move forward after release. Yet today’s report highlights that children are still being released from custody without the critical support they need.
The Nacro-led Beyond Youth Custody programme set out a clear framework to improve resettlement for young people. Despite positive words from the Government, it is clear that there is still a very long way to go to make sure that all children leaving custody receive the support they need to move forward to a positive future.”
