Nacro responds to the IMB Annual Report at HMP Pentonville covering the period from 1st April 2024 to 31st March 2025, released today (02.10.2025). The report outlines “inhumane conditions which are leading to mental health issues, self-harm and violence”.
Campbell Robb, Chief Executive, social justice charity Nacro, said:Β
βThis report lays bare the grim reality at HMP Pentonville – overcrowded, vermin-infested cells, a lack of basic essentials, and limited access to education or work. Itβs deeply concerning that eight prisoners died during the reporting year, compared to two the year before.
βThis rise is a stark reminder of the human cost of a system under immense strain. These are not isolated issues, but symptoms of chronic underfunding, staff shortages, and overcrowding.
βPrisons must be places of rehabilitation and hope, not fear and neglect. We urgently need investment in staff, mental health and addiction support, education, and employment services to break this cycle.β
