Helen Dyson, Interim Chief Executive of Nacro, said:
โThe findings from HMP Leeds are deeply troubling: cramped and overcrowded conditions, high numbers of people taking their own lives, inadequate care for those at risk of self-harm, high levels of drug use,ย including people developing substance misuse problems after entering prison, and a lack of learning opportunities. Worryingly 30% of people were released homeless last year – twice that of the national average – doubling their chance of reoffending.
“Prisons should be places of rehabilitation, preparing people for release. If we are serious about creating safer communities and reducing reoffending, we must better support people both inside and outside of prison.”

Helen Dyson, Interim Chief Executive at Nacro, said: โOne million young people out of education, training of work is a troubling milestone. That’s one million young people failed and unable to thrive.
โWe have to focus on prevention. We want to see the pupil premium extended to all disadvantaged 16-19 year olds, and a relentless focus on reducing the disadvantage gap and addressing why far too many young people fall through the cracks. This includes tackling the crisis in special educational needs provision and tackling child poverty.
โYoung people are the future our country we must invest in them now.โ
