Nacro response to government announcement on changes to Transforming Rehabilitation

In response to today’s government announcement that existing probation contracts will be cut short and further changes will be made to the system, Nacro Chief Executive Jacob Tas, said:
“Through consistent evidence to the government and the Justice Select Committee, Nacro has repeatedly highlighted the need for change and we welcome the government’s recognition that the existing system is not delivering as desired and now their willingness to act.

“It is critical that proposed changes must focus on improving the outcomes of people on probation to support them to move away from crime, reduce reoffending and ultimately prevent the next victim of crime. We must also see a bigger role for the voluntary sector who, in many cases, have extensive experience of successfully working with people in the criminal justice system but who have played only a small part in the current system. We look forward to contributing to the consultation in full.”
