Carl's story with Nacro

Carl’s journey with Nacro: from prison and sofa surfing to having a place to call home

Published:

From prison to sofa surfing

After being released from prison, Carl had nowhere to call home and was sofa-surfing. His kids were in his parents care until he could find stable, suitable accommodation. Carl was working with child services and Nacro’s Commissioned Rehabilitation services to find the right place to get back on his feet.

Nacro’s Commissioned Rehabilitation Services (CRS) provides support to people on probation or on remand with housing, finances, and personal wellbeing, aiming to improve emotional wellbeing, prevent homelessness, and promote social inclusion. Support consists of one-to-one coaching or group sessions.

A roof over his head and a space to call his own

Options for private rental accommodation were limited, but the staff at Nacro’s CRS worked hard to find Carl somewhere to live. He needed accommodation bigger than a one bed flat for his kids; however, as he wasn’t working at the time, Carl wasn’t able to afford a larger place.

The staff at CRS managed to connect Carl up with a social landlord providing family housing, and Carl was assessed as eligible to be placed in a two bed property. The place is right around the corner from his mum, providing some stability for the children and family support on the doorstep if needed. Carl is now his two bed property, and is able to see his kids with regular visits.

Nacro’s policy work in justice

With 1000 prison-leavers released into homelessness a month, Carl’s story is all too common. Nacro’ policy work and campaigns work to end prison-leaver homelessness. Read about what we do here.
