In June 2021, Forces in Mind Trust commissioned Nacro in partnership with the University of Northampton to conduct research into the current processes, mechanisms and barriers in place to identify former service personnel and examine barriers to uptake of support in the criminal justice system and their families.
The research will explore the strengths and weaknesses of the current identification processes across England, Wales and Scotland, and identify the current provision of statutory and voluntary support services available to ex-armed service personnel in the criminal justice system. The research team will work with ex-service personnel who are, or have been in the system and their families, to understand their experiences and the barriers to support.
Final publication of the research findings is planned 2023. The Ministry of Justice has agreed to then consider the findings from this work and explore what more can be done to improve identification and recording of veterans in the prison and probation system.
