Course overview

Think you would like a career working with animals? Then our animal care course is perfect for you. You’ll learn how to care for a range of animals including their dietary requirements, maintaining accommodation, health checking and how to enrich their lives. All while gaining practical experience to support your future career opportunities.

What will I learn?

Level 1 Animal Care is aimed at anyone who is interested in animal care and will be based at our Ouseburn Farm site. You will complete both practical and theory-based units such as animal handling, accommodation, and feeding and watering.

Modules

Learners will undertake theory and practical units which can include:

• Safe and effective working practices in land-based industries
• Assist with maintaining the health and wellbeing of animals
• Assist with watering and feeding animals
• Assist with the preparation and maintenance of animal accommodation
• Assist with the handling and restraint of animals

Assessment

You will be assessed through a combination of coursework assignments and practical observations.

Work experience

You will have the chance to do at least two weeks of relevant work experience to support your studies, gain experience and potentially develop contacts with future employers. Our team will help you secure a work placement and will provide you with everything required for you to attend your placement.

Enrichment opportunities

There are a variety of enrichment opportunities on offer throughout the year, including trips and external visits.

Career and progression

You can progress onto a Level 2 Animal Care course.

*GCSE/Functional Skills English and maths are only required if you haven’t already gained a level 4 or above.
