If you’re thinking about a career in landscape maintenance, looking for something a bit different from mainstream college, and still want a nationally recognised certificate, our Get Set! for Landscape Maintenance Level 1 is a great place to start.
Through work experience, practical learning in small, personalised classes, and one-to-one support, you will come away with the experience, skills, and knowledge you need to kickstart your career in the landscape maintenance industry.
Giving you the transferable skills and knowledge, you need to start your career, progress onto further levels of study, or pursue an apprenticeship.

What will I learn?At Nacro Education Middlesbrough, we let you learn in your way, at your pace.
On Get Set! for Landscape Maintenance Level 1 you will gain an understanding of skills such as fence building, boardwalk repairs, and general maintenance of public walkways.
These subjects will be taught both in the Nacro workshop and in the local Stockton area. You will also learn about maintaining and using 2-stroke petrol machinery used in plant control.
During your time on the course, you will gain practical hands-on experience in our workshop, accompanied by classroom work to further develop your understanding.
You will be awarded the qualification following successful completion of the units through a portfolio of evidence.
ModulesDuring your Landscape Maintenance Level 1 course, you will cover a range of modules designed to introduce you to the skills and knowledge you'll need for a career in landscape maintenance. This is alongside developing your employability skills.

By completing these modules, you will be able to gain an industry recognised certification.
As part of your Get Set! Landscape Maintenance Level 1 course, you will also complete your GCSE and/or Functional Skills English and/or maths, depending on whether you have achieved a grade 4 or above.
AssessmentAt Nacro Education Middlesbrough, assessed on the course's practical tasks and feedback will be given in a one-to-one meeting with your teacher.
Your teacher will go through all this when you sign up for the course.
Work experienceOur Get Set! courses give you the opportunity to gain real-world experience working in local businesses alongside the learning you’ll do at Nacro Education.
For Landscape Maintenance Level 1, you will do practical work experience every week in the community by completing tasks as part of our countryside renovations for the local council. This includes tree surgery, hedge trimming, fence and bridge building, maintaining bridleways and stiles.
This means you’ll leave with something impressive to add to your CV, as well as gaining practical experience and skills.
Enrichment opportunitiesEnrichment activities allow you to gain valuable extra-curricular experiences that enable you to stand out on your CV. As part of all our Get Set! courses, you will be involved in a variety of enrichment opportunities which are on offer through the year, including:
• Email writing and communication skills.
• CV writing and interview practice.
• Job research.
For the Landscape Maintenance Level 1 course, students will be given an opportunity to explore the wider world and bond with your classmates through external activities such as workplace visits, football activities, and go-karting.
Career and progressionAfter successfully passing this course, you will have core knowledge to progress to a higher-level qualification and to move forward towards your chosen career.
The main aim of this qualification is to help prepare students to progress into further learning and training in the landscaping sector.
Once you have completed your qualification, you can choose which area you would like to specialise in.
