Nacro welcomes report on the treatment of young adult offenders from Commons Justice Committee

Nacro welcomes the Justice Committee’s report of its inquiry on Young Adult Offenders and supports the Committee’s recognition of the distinct needs of 18-25 year olds in the criminal justice system.
Speaking of the report, Jacob Tas, Nacro Chief Executive said:

“We applaud the Committee for its recognition that young adults up to the age of 25 have distinct needs to those of children and older adults in the criminal justice system and that we need a new evidence-based approach.

“Young adults are overrepresented in the criminal justice system and the committee rightly recognises that the current system, with its high rates of reoffending, is not working for many reasons.

“This report presents a real opportunity to change this picture and Nacro – along with the Transition to Adulthood Alliance (T2A) and its coalition members – calls on the government to accept and implement the blueprint set out in the Committee’s report.”
