Nacro learners raise over £200 for Cancer Research
On Tuesday 1st November Nacro learners and staff in Carlisle completed a 10k charity river walk to raise money for Cancer Research. Students were sponsored by family and friends and raised over £200 for the charity.
The 16-19 year olds, who are studying English, maths and employability skills qualifications, planned the walk and voted for their favourite charity before taking home sponsor forms. The walk took place along the river paths of Carlisle. This followed on from the recent Marble River Run Project the learners were involved in, which was supported by the Eden Rivers Trust. The finished sculpture is displayed at Tullie House Museum.
Nacro learners were also accompanied by staff and apprentices from the Eden Rivers Trust, a charity which works to protect and conserve the River Eden.
In addition to raising money for a good cause, students were able to learn about the river and add to their skills set as they took photographs along the way for entry into a photography competition.
Courteney Johnson, a Nacro learner, said; “The walk was a lot further than we had thought, but it was worth it and we all feel really proud to have raised this money for a charity which we have all been affected by at some point and in some way.”
The students enjoyed the feeling of doing something for others and found the experience very positive.
Another learner Chloe said “The weather even went in our favour as the sun beamed all day!”
