Get Set! to start your journey into the hair and beauty sector with Nacro Education Middlesbrough.
If you’re thinking about a career in construction, looking for something a bit different from mainstream college, and still want a nationally recognised certificate, our Get Set! for Hair and Beauty Level 1 is a great place to start.
This course offers a taster of the various roles in the Hair and Beauty industry so you can try them out before choosing one.
Through work experience, practical learning in small, personalised classes and one-to-one support, you will come away with the experience, skills, and knowledge you need to kickstart your career in the hair and beauty industry.
Giving you the transferable skills and knowledge, you need to start your career, progress onto further levels of study, or pursue an apprenticeship.
At the end of the course, you’ll have the hands-on experience and confidence you need to take your next step.
What will I learn?
At Nacro Education Middlesbrough, we let you learn in your way, at your pace.
On Get Set! for Hair and Beauty Level 1 you will gain an understanding of the jobs within the hair and beauty industry. You will be given a chance to get hands-on experience of these jobs and find out what you enjoy.
You will be studying in a real salon environment on live models, getting practical experience in hair shampooing, styling, manicure, and hand care.
Modules
During your Hair and Beauty Level 1 course, you will cover a range of modules designed to introduce you to the skills and knowledge you'll need for a career in the industry. This is alongside developing your employability skills.
These include:
• The different hair and beauty salons, services and career options open to you. For example, working on a cruise ship, on film sets, freelance work and many more.
• Shampooing and styling of hair.
• Hand care and manicures.
By completing these modules, you will be able to gain an industry recognised certification. When you have completed the core modules you can extend your knowledge by trying out skills such as hair colouring and acrylic nail extensions.
As part of your Get Set! Hair and Beauty Level 1 course, you will also complete your GCSE and/or Functional Skills English and/or maths, depending on whether you have achieved a grade 4 or above.
Assessment
At Nacro Middlesborough Education Centre, we use a variety of assessment methods to ensure you achieve the Hair and Beauty Level 1 qualification.
You will be assessed on the practical tasks and feedback will be given in a one-to-one meeting with your teacher. Practical assessments are conducted in a real salon environment on live models. Your teacher will go through all this when you sign up for the course.
Work experience
Our Get Set! courses give you the opportunity to gain real-world experience working in local businesses alongside the learning you’ll do at Nacro Education.
For Hair and Beauty Level 1, you will have the opportunity to work with a local hairdressing or beauty salon.
You will be given help to find a suitable placement and supported while working there, meaning you’ll leave with something impressive to add to your CV, as well as gaining practical experience and skills.
Enrichment opportunities
Enrichment activities allow you to gain valuable extra-curricular experiences that enable you to stand out on your CV. As part of all our Get Set! courses, you will be involved in a variety of enrichment opportunities which are on offer through the year, including:
• Email writing and communication skills.
• CV writing and interview practice.
• Job research.
For the Hair and Beauty Level 1 course, students will be given an opportunity to explore the wider world and bond with your classmates through external activities such as workplace visits, wholesalers, and trade shows.
Career and progression
After successfully passing this course, you will have core knowledge to progress to a higher-level qualification and to move forward towards your chosen career.
The main aim of this qualification is to help prepare students to progress into further learning and training in the hair and beauty sector. Once you have completed your qualification, you can choose which area you would like to specialise in, for example beauty therapy, hairdressing, or make-up artistry. You’ll then be able to progress on to Hair and Beauty Level 2.
