Nacro in Brighton opened its doors last week to 16-18 year olds who are currently not in education, employment or training. There was a wide range of activities so that local young people could come and eat, me et staff and students as well as have a go at the activities taking place. The Open Day was particularly aimed at students who are already considering starting a course with us but all potential students were invited.

This is the first year in which 16 year olds will have to look at education and training to take them up to the age of 18, so it is now more important than ever for them to understand the range of choices on offer. Just over 6.7% of Brighton’s 16-18 year olds are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training), and Nacro education centres can provide employment preparation, problem solving, and pre-vocational and vocational courses that get young people work-ready. Last month, Ofsted awarded our national education provision a grade 2, placing Nacro at the top of this specialist sector of education.

Councillor Sue Shanks attended along with other local dignitaries, and was given a tour by Sean Atkinson, Centre Manager at Nacro Brighton.

Sean Atkinson said: “Nacro understands that it’s important for young people to choose the life they want and we can offer a programme of education and training that suits their needs. We provide lots of individual support which was highlighted in last month’s Ofsted report. We put together an individualised programme for every learner and we are committed to providing work placements related to their vocational area of interest.”

As well as eating locally sourced speciality sausages at our free barbeque, we offered taster sessions in our vocational areas for everyone to have a go. There was a free raffle to which a number of local businesses donated prizes.

The courses we offer allow young people to earn while they learn – with bursaries and travel costs while attending the courses:

  • Level 1 Certificate and Diploma in Construction
  • CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) training
  • Level 1 Certificate in Childcare
  • Level 1 Certificate in Retail and PSD
  • Functional Skills and Employability Skills
  • Level 1 Certificate in Art and Design.
