Welcome to this edition of the Nacro housing newsletter

At Nacro, we want to deliver services which are innovative and offer good value for money. Commissioners in different parts of the country recognise this and we have recently won contracts in Lincolnshire, where we have joined forces with other local providers, and in West Berkshire, where we have developed our offer in line with changing demands. We also seek to share our knowledge and promote best practice, as we recently did in Essex. As always, we want to benefit from the unique insight of our service users and we continue to offer opportunities for service user involvement.

Children’s and public health services win in Lincolnshire

Contracts to deliver children’s and public health services in Lincolnshire have recently been awarded to a consortium, led by Nacro and including three other local housing support providers, Axiom, LEAP and Nottingham Community Housing Association. Delivery of the three-year contracts will commence in July 2015.

We will be providing housing and crash pad emergency accommodation to 16 and 17 year olds, care leavers aged up to 21, young people with complex needs and young parents. Through our consortium partners, we will have access to move-on properties which will facilitate the transition of these young people into independent living. In South Kesteven and West Lindsey we will be providing short-term interventions for adults including emergency and move-on accommodation. We will aim to move people into secure tenancies as soon as possible.

We are excited about these new opportunities and delivering sustainable outcomes for the people using these services.

Contract extended for young people’s service in West Berkshire

We have been awarded the three-year contract to deliver housing to young people in West Berkshire, a service we have been running since 2010. Since it began, staff have worked closely with commissioners and local stakeholders, and have responded proactively to the changing needs of those using the service. This is reflected in the current delivery model which includes five parent and child units, which were introduced as a result of an increase in demand, crash pad emergency accommodation and emergency accommodation for those whose legal rights to asylum have all been exhausted.

A specialist member of staff who has established links with health and children’s services supports the parents and children using our service. We also have staff who specialise in safeguarding, information, advice and guidance for asylum seekers, family mediation and domestic abuse. The service offers drop in sessions where young people can access information, advice and guidance about their rights and options, as well as personal issues. We have strong links with local providers to support access to education, training, employment and volunteering opportunities.

Sharing our expertise internationally

At the end of last year Essex County Council hosted a group of 21 senior officials from Jiangsu in China. The purpose of their visit was to learn about the systems and practices which the UK has in place to promote a stable society. Nacro has worked closely with Essex County Council for many years and a visit to our Colchester site was organised. The session gave us the opportunity to make new contacts and share expertise and best practice.

Nacro Community Voice

At Nacro we are firmly committed to making sure the people who use our services shape and influence them and this is at the heart of our service design model. Our Community Voice strategic plan has recently been developed by trustees, our leadership team and service users to ensure we increase and widen our service user involvement opportunities.

We are developing a range of ways to get involved which will appeal to service users. Through Community Voice, service users have recently been consulted and provided feedback on the development of the new Nacro website and the new strategic plan, both of which will be launched this year.
