Course overview

If you would like to work with children, then our childcare courses are a great place to start. We will take you through the basics of childcare and show you how to make learning fun, keep children safe and involve them in group activities. You will get plenty of practical experience while you learn, which will give you confidence when you start work.

What will I learn?

You will gain an overview of early years and study an introduction to child development and how children learn and develop.

You will explore a range of activities that you can carry out with children to help them to progress including physical activities and arts & crafts. Alongside this you will gain knowledge of health & safety and how to safeguard children from the ages of 0-5 years 11 months.

The course will have practical, hands on learning activities alongside developing writing skills.

Modules

There are a range of modules available for either the Award, Certificate or Diploma size qualification. Modules include topics such as:

• Child development
• Sharing learning experiences with children
• Supporting babies to play
• Science activities for young children
• Healthy eating for families

Assessment

You will be required to complete a range of written assignments including booklets and posters. You will also be required to demonstrate some skills whilst being observed by your tutor.

Work experience

You will have the chance to do at least two weeks of relevant work experience to support your studies, gain experience and potentially develop contacts with future employers. Our team will help you secure a work placement and will provide you with everything required for you to attend your placement.

Enrichment opportunities

There are a variety of enrichment opportunities on offer throughout the year, including trips and external visits.

Career and progression

Upon completion of your Level 1 you will be able to progress onto a Level 2 Childcare qualification or further study.

*GCSE/Functional Skills English and maths are only required if you haven’t already gained a level 4 or above.
