Waleed joined our study programme at Nacro Walsall in April 2016. He had a passion to work in law but failed to achieve his GCSEs in English and maths during mainstream education. He had also struggled with his functional skills levels at a previous training provider.

Nacro provided information, advice and guidance in the induction stage and, together with Waleed, identified that he would need a minimum of Level 2 English and maths functional skills to be accepted on to a Law & Criminology Access to Higher Education course at Matthew Boulton College.

Extra support sessions for maths were arranged, as Waleed’s initial assessment results showed that he was working at three levels below the Level 2 he needed. Waleed worked extremely hard at all subjects and, as a result, achieved a Level 1 Award in Health & Social Care and, more importantly, his Level 2 English and maths qualifications.

Nacro Walsall supported Waleed with his application for the Law & Criminology course. Matthew Boulton College accepted Waleed’s application and he was asked to attend an interview in July 2016. In the run up to the interview Waleed’s CV was updated and he received support with interview techniques and confidence at an interview.

Waleed attended a successful interview and was offered a place at Matthew Boulton College on the course. He visited Nacro in October 2016 to personally thank the tutors for their support; he has informed Nacro that he is enjoying the course and is looking forward to the future.
