Megan is a GCSE English learner at Nacro’s Carlisle Centre who has overcome great challenges to gain her pass and move on to an apprenticeship that she’s aspired to achieve. In December 2015, devastating floods hit the centre, which has been out of action ever since while renovation works take place.

The teaching space was moved into temporary Portacabins outside the main building but the learners remained motivated, and the staff were able to keep them focused on achieving their goals. Despite difficult working arrangements, Megan continued to study. At exam time, she had to make a 400-mile round trip on 2 separate occasions to the nearest registered centre.

All her hard work finally paid off as she achieved a Grade C pass. With this fantastic achievement under her belt, Megan can now apply for the mechanics apprenticeship that she has desperately wanted for a long time.
