As told by Angela Bailey, skills trainer, Nacro Blackburn.

John joined Nacro’s Study Programme in Blackburn in 2013. His former education had been patchy due to problems at home and he had left school without any qualifications.

After completing the initial assessment at Nacro it was evident that John was a very capable individual. However, when he began his one-to-one sessions, he was exhibiting a lot of anger due to the issues in his personal life and his tutor told him that she could not help him if he would not open up. As a result of the tutor building a strong channel of communication with John, he went on to do really well, completing his E3 certificate in progression, his level 1 qualification in English and maths, as well as developing excellent timekeeping and attendance skills.

John also expressed an interest in engineering and Nacro secured him a place with Training 2000 in Blackburn which enabled him to begin an apprenticeship in engineering.

John continues to make excellent progress and is working extremely hard. He says that it is entirely due to the fact that Nacro helped him to overcome the obstacles in his life that he can now look forward to a better future.

Nacro’s centre in Blackburn has also helped another five young people recently to access apprenticeships locally through Training 2000.
