Improving policy and practice

Nacro works to change lives and reduce crime now and to find ways to do this better in the future.

Through our work in over 300 projects across England and Wales, we are constantly learning more about what works to reduce crime and resettle offenders. We strive to improve the impact of our work and find new ways to challenge the problems that lie at the root of offending. We seek to share this learning with government and decision makers to develop better policy around youth crime prevention, youth justice, prisons and resettlement.

Our policy department helps a multitude of agencies improve practice through providing research, consultancy and training around: youth crime and justice; offenders with mental health problems; equality and diversity; and resettlement provision for prisoners and ex-offenders.

This expertise and experience inform our continuing efforts to bring about change, including:

  • providing better support for young people in trouble to find positive alternatives to antisocial behaviour and crime which keep them out of the criminal justice system wherever possible
  • reducing the unnecessary use of custody. England and Wales has more than 1.5 times the number of prisoners per 100 people than France or Germany – and the evidence shows it is not effective
  • improving resettlement provision for all people leaving prison, including those serving short sentences who currently receive little help and for all prisoners as they make the tricky transition to the community
  • putting into law the long delayed reforms to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act which would allow more sentences to become spent more quickly, earning ex-offenders the chance to make a fresh start
