Education and employment

Getting young people involved with education or training and older people into work is an essential part of helping them establish settled and productive lives. Each year we provide learning and employment opportunities for around 11,000 people across England and Wales.

Our education and employment services are informed by an understanding of people's needs 'in the round'. So we have strong links with other Nacro services and partner agencies that can provide additional support with, for instance, substance misuse or housing.

We work in partnership with other agencies and with local employers to help people get basic skills and other qualifications, on-the-job training, work placements and prepare for employment.

We provide:

  • services for young people excluded or at risk of exclusion from school, offering activities designed to rekindle their interest in learning and return to school or training
  • foundation training for young people through the entry to employment (E2E) programme, helping them prepare for work or further training. For young people with negative experiences of the education system, this builds confidence and helps them develop practical and interpersonal skills
  • work-based learning for adults, supporting them to re-enter the local labour market. For the long-term unemployed, we provide pre-vocational support and on-the-job training to reflect the requirements of local employers
  • services for offenders and ex-offenders, enabling them to make realistic career choices, prepare for training or employment, and prevent a return to crime. We work to help people overcome low self-esteem, poor education, lack of skills and work experience, discrimination and lack of information, in order to find work

As well as providing services, we work with local strategic partnerships on plans to to address crime and disorder and regeneration. We promote education and employment policies that will deliver the programmes that ex-offenders and disengaged young people need.
