Youth Justice Board budget wasted on ineffective custody
Nacro, the crime reduction charity, has backed the call by Frances Done, Chair of the Youth Justice Board, for courts to reduce their use of custodial sentences for juveniles. Paul Cavadino, Nacro's Chief Executive, said:
"Jailing large numbers of young offenders makes it harder to reduce youth crime. Eighty per cent of juveniles leaving custody are reconvicted within two years and intensive community supervision is much more likely to steer young people away from reoffending.
"This country's zeal for locking up young offenders means that 64 per cent of the Youth Justice Board's budget is now spent on custody. These resources would be far more effective in cutting youth crime if they were spent on strengthening community supervision and prevention programmes."
