Nacro in Action
Nacro's Community Remands projects in Bristol, Bradford, London and Newcastle offer courts an alternative to remanding a young offender in prison or placing them in care by offering to support them in the community.
|

|
Support can range from setting-up training to arranging treatment for drug abuse or helping resolve family conflicts. The projects also runs a mentoring scheme pairing young people with volunteer adult mentors who are recruited from the local community.

Young people are responsible for 40% of crimes such as theft, burglary, robbery and violence and youth crime and fear of youth crime are blighting many communities. Tackling youth crime is a priority for the government and it has introduced major changes to the youth justice system - which together with preventive measures - aim to reduce offending by young people.
Nacro had been working to find better ways of dealing with youth crime and young offenders for more than 25 years. Since the introduction of the Crime and Disorder Act, we have been working around the country helping to ensure that the youth justice reforms work effectively and fairly.

Nacro's current work includes:
- Supporting bail projects across England and Wales to ensure that young people can be safely remanded in the community instead of in prison wherever possible
- Researching the use of custodial sentences across the country to identify geographical variations in order to promote consistent good practice
- Producing briefing packs for magistrates about youth offending teams
- Providing support and consultancy services to drugs, alcohol and cognitive behaviour schemes across the country
- Working in partnership with youth offending teams across Inner London to promote good practice, develop policy and ensure consistency
We can help with:
- Planning, policy development and inter-agency working
- Project development and management
- Research, monitoring and evaluation
- Reviews and audits
- Training programmes
- Conferences
- Information and advice, including a regular mailing of information about youth crime and justice
