About the service

The StreetGames initiative is a partnership project that works with a number of organistaions to offer sports and activities to young people aged 8 to 15 who for various reasons have limited access to such opportunities. Regular activity will take place in 3 target areas and as groups develop they will feed into local, regional and national competition. In addition to sports and activities for young people the project offers the opportunity for anyone aged 16 or over to volunteer by assisting coaches and mentoring the young people taking part. Volunteers receive training such as Child Protection, First Aid and the opportunity to gain sports qualifications as well as improving their confidence and self esteem.

What will I get out of it?

The volunteer programme provides education, training and mentorship supported through local structures to increase delivery capacity for local grass roots sport and physical activity opportunities. The volunteer co-ordinator works closely with community partners to identify and support volunteers to reach their full potential. Programme Objectives 1. To introduce leadership and mentorship opportunities for the Reading community. 2. To develop a community volunteering structure for grass roots sport and leisure opportunities. 3. To raise achievement and self-esteem in all those involved in the project 4. To increase the number of qualified coaches working in the Reading community. 5. To contribute to a greater sense of community and the reduction of social exclusion through supporting the development of community sport and physical activity opportunities.
