About the service
The Nacro Preston Restorative Justice Project provides support to both victims and offenders of crime and antisocial behaviour.
The centre works with the police, youth offending teams and other referral agencies to divert young people and adults away from the criminal justice system. Once a person has been referred to a panel, the centre invites those who have caused harm and those who have been affected to take part in the process.
An RJ Officer will then visit both parties separately to ensure they understand the process, are willing to take part and want to resolve the issue. A Peer Panel is then held, which is run by volunteers, with the support of Nacro staff.
The panel volunteers are trained to help both parties talk through what happened and how the harm can be repaired. A restorative justice agreement is then drawn up clearly stating what the offender must then do to make up for their actions.
This may include making an apology, offering to pay for damage to property or doing volunteer work. The centre also offers training in restorative justice and related practices for volunteers, partner organisations and other practitioners locally and nationally.
What will I get out of it?
- victims - get closure and the chance to move on from the negative feelings they have as a result of the offence
- offenders - get the chance to understand the impact of their actions on other people
- volunteers - are given training in mentoring and UK Street Law that they will then deliver to service users who will ultimately become mentors themselves. Through completing The UK Street Law Training, service users and volunteers can receive an Asdan award and apply for the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme
