Nacro in Action

Salford Football Community Link Project

Nacro's football project in Salford diverts young people away from crime through playing football. The project works with the local community to set up and run football clubs for young people aged up to 16.

With one paid member of staff acting as co-ordinator, volunteers - local residents - take the lead role in organising and running the clubs, which provide coaching and take part in tournaments throughout the area. Crime rates in the areas where the project is operating have fallen significantly. In one estate, the number of incidents involving trouble with young people dropped dramatically from 44 to six per month following the introduction of the project.

As many as 160,000 16-18 year olds are not involved in any form of education, employment or training. These young people are far more likely to get involved in crime than those who attend school or college or have a job.

For over twenty years, Nacro has been running projects aimed at providing disengaged young people with the opportunity to learn new skills.

We can develop, set-up and run:

  • Youth activity projects that provide constructive activities for young people living in disadvantaged areas, such as inner-city housing estates. Activities include football, arts and peer education projects examining issues such as alcohol and drugs. Our activity projects currently involve around 5,000 young people and 350 volunteers across the country.
  • School exclusion projects that provide alternative learning opportunities for children who are not attending school regularly or are under-achieving. Tailor-made programmes build children's social skills, as well as literacy, numeracy and communication skills and provide extra support aimed at getting young people back into school or into training or employment.
  • Projects for young people who are not in education, training or employment that help them to make realistic decisions about their options for the future. Young people usually become involved in the projects through outreach work on the streets and in the areas where young people hang out. Projects offer young people the opportunity to take part in a programme covering issues such as health, housing and independent living skills, budgeting and careers guidance and assist them to go on to further education or training or into employment.
