Volunteer mentors needed

We're looking for volunteer mentors from London, Dorset and Hampshire. If you are interested, please download and complete an application form and send it to annabel.davies@nacro.org.uk by Friday 19 November 2010

About the service

Nacro Milestones is a mentoring project based at HMP/YOI Portland which works with young men aged 18 to 24 who are released to Hampshire, Dorset and South London.

Volunteers from the age of 23 are recruited from those areas and following a selection interview and training, are matched with a mentee.

Prior to release they meet with their mentee in the prison and commit themselves to working for a period of at least six months following release. Mentors meet with their mentee on a weekly basis as well as communicating by phone.

We provide:

  • mentors for young people being released from HMP/YOI Portland young offenders
  • training for mentors
  • on-going support to both mentors and mentees

What will I get out of it?

If you are a young person on the project, you will gain:

  • support, advice and guidance following release
  • help with employment, training, education, accommodation, benefits, family issues or personal problems.
  • increased self-esteem and social skills
  • a sense of inclusion within the community

If you are a volunteer, you will gain:

  • first-hand experience of mentoring
  • an increased knowledge of the criminal justice system and rehabilitation
  • a strong holistic understanding of challenges an ex-young offender faces
  • a sense of fulfillment when working with their mentee
