About the service
Nacro Milestones is a mentoring project based at HMYOI Portland which works with young men aged 18 to 21 who are released to Hampshire, Dorset and South London.
Volunteers from the age of 23 are recruited from those areas and following a selection interview and training, are matched with a mentee.
Prior to release they meet with their mentee in the prison and commit themselves to working for a period of at least six months following release. Mentors meet with their mentee on a weekly basis as well as communicating by phone.
We provide:
- mentors for young people being released from Portland young offenders
- training for mentors
What will I get out of it?
- support, advice and guidance following release
- help with employment, training, education, accommodation, benefits, family issues or personal problems.
- increased self-esteem and social skills
- a sense of inclusion within the community
