Offender health

Around 70% of the prison population has two or more mental health disorders and a high proportion of people within the criminal justice system have mental health problems or a learning disability.

Obstacles which stem from a lack of joined-up services can prevent them from getting the help they need.
At Nacro we are working to change this as part of our overall contribution to reducing reoffending.
We produce good practice guides, policy reports and briefing papers on topics relating to offender health and, under the umbrella of the Offender Health Collaborative, we work in partnership with leading organisations including:

  • The Centre for Mental Health
  • Nottingham University Institute of Mental Health
  • Revolving Doors Agency
  • NHS Confederation
  • Cass Business School

Our mental health publications have covered numerous topics including:

  • good practice for liaison and diversion schemes
  • managing dangerous people with severe personality disorders
  • young people, drug use and offending
  • the mental health of children and young people who offend
  • the resettlement of offenders with mental health needs or a learning disability
  • foreign national offenders, mental health and the criminal justice system.
