Justice system rethink will help reduce crime

Nacro is calling for a radical shift in the way money is spent in the criminal justice system.
Nacro chief executive Paul McDowell has been speaking out in response to a Justice Committee report out this week Cutting Crime: The Case for Justice Reinvestment.
The report by MPs concluded that the number of inmates in England and Wales' jails should be cut by a third, and the money saved put into community projects.
Paul McDowell backed the findings saying: “Custody is expensive and overused. Prison resources should be reserved for serious offenders who present a danger to the public. If we continue to lock people up at the rate we are, the country will soon be facing a serious prisons crisis.
“Our experience shows that investment in prevention and community-based projects are far more effective and financially viable way to reduce crime and protect communities.”
