Nacro is the largest charity dedicated to reducing crime in England and Wales, working with over 83,000 people each year in 300 communities. Here we list our successes in 2009/10.

In summary
- 83,500 people used our services
- 24,100 children and young people were steered away from crime and into new opportunities through our preventive services
- 19,800 offenders serving sentences in prison or the community were given practical help to make a fresh start and move on from crime
- 39,500 ex-offenders were helped with resettlement, through sorting out their issues with housing, training or work
- 1,300 Nacro staff and 690 Nacro volunteers dedicated themselves to reducing crime and changing lives in over 300 communities across England and Wales
- 70% of the people we work with are offenders or have offended, others are young people in trouble and at serious risk of getting caught up in crime
Prevention
- 11,300 young people took part in positive activities to help steer them away from antisocial behaviour and crime
- Nacro youth inclusion projects worked with nearly 1,600 children aged from 8 to 15
- 2,200 people were provided with housing to help them establish a stable life in their communities and prevent them getting involved in crime.
- 30% (1,188) of all Nacro’s housing residents were aged 21 or younger
- 10,100 young people attended Nacro’s alternative education and foundation learning programmes and 70% achieved one or more successful outcome, such as a qualification, job or a move to further education
Offender management
- Nacro provided a resettlement service in 24 prisons in England and Wales, helping 19,000 prisoners
- 130 offenders were supported on Nacro’s 3 intensive support and surveillance programmes
- Courts remanded 570 defendants to our community bail support schemes. Up to 60% successfully completed their period under our supervision
Resettlement
- 32,600 people contacted Nacro’s Resettlement Plus Helpline for advice, mostly about disclosing a criminal conviction
- More than 2,200 ex-prisoners and other offenders were able to stabilise their lives in Nacro accommodation or by having support from Nacro in their own tenancies
- 70% of all our housing clients (4,400) moved on successfully into their own home
