With the General Election looming, the three main political parties are all voicing a similar commitment to enhancing the voluntary sector’s role in the criminal justice system. At this afternoon conference, Nacro brings together the voluntary sector, national and local politicians, the statutory and private sectors to explore what this might mean in practice:
- Small and local community groups, large national charities - which voluntary sector are the political parties talking about?
- Many voluntary sector organisations are already deeply involved in the justice system - what do they think is the best way forward?
- Will the sector continue to be able to run services and campaign for change?
- How could commissioning and grant-making processes be improved to optimise the community and voluntary sectors’ role?
- Will charities end up subsidising the state?
The event will be chaired by Simon Israel, Home Affairs Correspondent for Channel 4 News and will be addressed by:
- Lord Bach The Lord’s Minister for Ministry of Justice
- Billy Bragg Singer-songwriter and Founder of Jail Guitar Doors
- Alan Duncan MP Shadow Justice Minister for Prisons
