changing lives reducing crime

Nacro is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2006/07. Since 1966, Nacro has remained committed to its core vision to create a safer, more inclusive, society; one which rehabilitates offenders in a way which stops reoffending and repairs relationships. Nacro now helps over 80,000 people each year.

Baroness Vivien Stern, a former Nacro Director, gave our 40th anniversary guest lecture in November 2006. In a stirring address, she set out the vital importance of continuing to change and improve our prison system and response to crime: how our system could be just as inhumane and ineffective as other, more obviously brutal regimes. She praised Nacro's track-record in proposing better responses to crime and providing services that showed how this could be put into practice. Click here for a copy of the speech.

Over the past 40 years the world has seen much change - Click here to view a timeline to jog your memory about major world events.

And over those years Nacro has been pioneering positive change in all aspects of crime reduction - from improving resettlement provision for prisoners and reducing discrimination in the criminal justice system, to running innovative employment, housing and community services. Since 1966, Nacro has worked to reduce crime by helping hundreds of thousands of people to change their lives and by campaigning for effective and inclusive criminal justice and social policy. It is challenging and important work that inspires us. We hope it inspires you to.
