About the Journal

Safer Society - the journal of crime reduction and community safety was published by Nacro. Its editorial position broadly reflected Nacro's philosophy and objectives. At the same time, the magazine was committed to promoting an open and reasoned debate about crime in the UK and therefore published articles that were not in line with Nacro's own policies and practices where they are based on strong evidence and plausible argument.

The journal's editorial policy was informed by four key commitments.

First
, that the public has an interest in the development of effective crime reduction policy. Second, that offenders should be dealt with justly, humanely and effectively. Third, that crime is not simply a matter of individual culpability but also a symptom of wider social problems. Finally, and most importantly, that these commitments are mutually reinforcing: informed and rational debate about crime will support the case for just, humane and non-discriminatory policy that tackles the problems of exclusion, division and inequality.
